Mysterious Sillamäe

Organiser: Sillamäe Museum

In Sillamäe, you can choose between two activities: you can go on a guided walk or visit two virtual reality installations at the Sillamäe Museum that invite visitors to reflect on utopias and dystopias, and their impact on society and the individual.

VR BIG BLACK – Utopia and the Atom
The development of a new super-powerful bomb had begun under a veil of secrecy in the Soviet Union during the Second World War. Large quantities of uranium were needed, and so every opportunity was taken to make any progress in this area. In the big black box, you will find out why Sillamäe became a closed city during the Soviet era. You’ll also learn the secrets of the atomic world.

VR SMALL WHITE – Dystopia
In 1920, the writer Yevgeny Zamyatin completed his novel ‘We. The book is set in a totalitarian futuristic society called One State, whose leader, the Benefactor, offers his subjects a semblance of security and prosperity, but not freedom. All the inhabitants of the country have a number instead of a name. In a city where people have become numbers, everyone lives in strictly identical rooms with glass walls. Personal time is allowed for 2 hours a day. Everything is controlled and monitored. Come and take a virtual reality journey to One State and discover if this is dystopia or is this way of life already here?

You can also visit the permanent exhibition “Mysterious Sillamäe’ on your own.

When you arrive at Toila you can choose between two activities. You can go on a guided walk or watch a virtual reality installation at Oru Palace, which was the summer residence of the Estonian Head of State, President Konstantin Päts from 1935.

The palace was severely damaged after the June coup in 1940 and on 13 August 1941 retreating Red Army troops set fire to the palace, resulting in it being largely destroyed. The ruins, in which mines were stored, were blown up by German troops in 1944. What the palace looked like in 1938 can be seen with virtual reality headsets.
